一、學科範圍

麻醉學（Anesthesiology）是一門專科醫學。主要是運用藥物來令病人暫時失去知覺，以供外科手術、產科止痛及某些診斷步驟之用。麻醉學除了包含麻醉本身的知識外，同時也是融合生理學、藥理學、內科學、外科學及疼痛醫學等多方面的醫學知識而成的一種整合性醫學。

現代麻醉學的研究範疇包括：

(一) 臨床麻醉Clinical Anesthesia

臨床麻醉包括手術麻醉、產科麻醉以及其他臨床診斷或治療時解除疼痛的一切麻醉工作。大致可分為全身麻醉（General Anesthesia）與區域麻醉（Regional Anesthesia），前者作用於大腦使患者意識暫時消失，後者作用於局部之神經傳導系統，患者意識清醒。

全身麻醉依其給藥之途徑不同，又可分為：吸入性麻醉（Inhalation Anesthesia）、靜脈麻醉（Intravenous Anesthesia）、直腸麻醉（Rectal Anesthesia）、肌肉注射麻醉等。

區域麻醉，又稱傳導性麻醉（Conductive Anesthesia），依藥物作用不同部位又可分為：脊髓麻醉（Spinal Anesthesia）、硬脊膜外腔麻醉（Epidural Anesthesia）、神經阻斷術（Nerve Block）、局部麻醉（Local Anesthesia）、體表麻醉（Topical Anesthesia）、靜脈區域麻醉（Regional IV Anesthesia）等。

(二) 疼痛控制Pain Control

對於慢性頑固性之疼痛，得加以控制減輕病人痛苦。

(三) 甦醒急救術Resuscitation及生命之維持治療

(四) 呼吸治療Respiratory Therapy

(五) 重症醫護
